On Characters

Here is a great Character Building Questionnaire so you can develop your next awesome character for your story:

  1. What's your character's name, middle initial, and nickname? 
  2. What are his or her physical characteristics?: Height, weight, eye color, hair color, etc.
  3. Are there any strange or unique physical attributes? 
  4. What's their favorite clothing style or outfit? 
  5. Where does he or she live? What is it like there? 
  6. Defining gestures / movements (i.e. curling his or her lip when he or she speaks, always keeping his or her eyes on the ground, intense energy bursts.)
  7. Things about his or her appearance he or she would most like to change. 
  8. What are your characters' pet peeves? 
  9. What is their food preference? What do they order for lunch or dinner?
  10. What are their relaxing activities? Hobbies and interests?
  11. What's your character's vice? Maybe they are a compulsive spender, innocuous, habitual over-consumption of sweets.
  12. Your character's situation will help define how you shape the character around the situation.
  13. What are he or she's pet peeves - like the floor needs swept or the dishes washed. Poor grammar, or a pair of slacks without creases.
  14. What are his or her goals and motivations?
  15. What's your character's typical daily schedule. What happens when it's disrupted?
  16. What are their strong points?
  17. How does he or she overcome hardship and survive?
  18. What's his or her personality? (strength of will, single minded determination, and passion).
  19. What are your character's beliefs? (heart, spirit, God).
  20. Any phobias?
  21. Things that make him or her happy:
  22. Family (describe):
  23. Deepest, darkest secret. (Reason he or she key this secret for so long). 
  24. This character is highly opinionated about: 
  25. Things that embarrass him or her: 
  26. Things that upset him or her: 
  27. Negative traits: 
  28. Quirks / eccentricities: 
  29. Insecurities: 
  30. Special skills / abilities: 
  31. Fondest memory: 
  32. Speaking style (fast, talkative, monotone, etc.)
  33. Political views:
  34. Description of his or her house: 
  35. Description of his or her bedroom: 
  36. Any pets? 
  37. Best thing that has ever happened to this character:
