10 Steps to Create a Movie

Film Concept - an idea or belief around which to tell a story. Propose ideas for approval by executive producer. Write your script - a written screenplay detailing story, settings, and dialogue. Draw storyboards for your film - sketches created by an illustrator to communicate changes of action or plot in a scene. Funding your film - find financing for the film so you're able to access proper equipment and staff. How to find Cast and Crew for your film - devote time to get necessary cast to fill roles. Scouting for Locations - visit as many locations as possible to get the right "on location" shot. Preparing a Shooting Script - break film into scenes placed in order of filming. Organizing a Schedule - creating a schedule gives you control over the day-to-day shooting. Writing and Distributing Call Sheets - a calendar of when each member should arrive for make up and what time actors are due on set. On Film Production

In my experience these are the top areas you must excel at during film production. This is just a short look into the business. I'll post more soon. Source First are you going to write your own, or are you going to go out and acquire one? If there is source material - say it's already a book or something like that needs to be adapted, then are you going to purchase the copyright of those rights, or are you going to option the rights? An option gives you a certain amount of time to make that movie before it becomes a purchase. The rights may or may not revert back to the original owner if that option is or isn't exercised. Development You need to hire your writers if you aren't already purchasing a screenplay. You need to do storyboards, package it, come up with a budget, hire a Director, and come up with a complete analysis of all costs. Now you need your financing. Either you are going to get it from a studio or you will get it independently from investors. I...

On Storytelling

Image
Storytelling is an art that has evolved over thousands of years. Main characters have ups and downs to shape a story. Vivid images are painted in words.  The human brain processes images 60x faster than words. the brain releases dopamine when there are emotional stories. Neural coupling activates our brain to give our own meaning to stories. Knowing this, you need quality content and a compelling story! Timeline of Storytelling The origin of storytelling goes back to prehistoric times. Cavemen told each other stories orally, and through sign language or rock drawings, for mystical rituals or before hunting. In ancient Egypt, storytelling was used for communications, entertainment, and religious purposes. The Greeks used their stories to explain natural occurrences in the form of myths. Home, the greatest of ancient Greek poets, created the Iliad and Odyssey, two epic poems that lie at the beginning of Western literature.  In Asia, there's a long tradition of s...

On Screenwriting

Image
Writing a screenplay is not easy. You will need discipline and you will need to learn the structure, character development and format. Not to worry, that is why I have condensed ten years of experience, hundreds of books and movies, into this article. I have written seven screenplays now, two television scripts, and two music video scripts. Only one of those films has made it to the big screen. Breaking into screenwriting often times requires persistence and focus and many, many years. Story logic, character development and structure are paramount when writing a traditional script. Each film follows a six stage plot structure. Robert McKee's Story tells us that you must be good at the nuts and bolts of a scene. Each scene hinges upon the other scene and everything must continue to move forward. A good story is a detective story - the audience wants to know what is going to happen next? Keep them guessing. You never want to be predictable. Scenes need to turn on at leas...

Q & A

Image
What's a quick introduction about you? I graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Communications. I attended University of Denver University for a Masters in Business Administration and completed a one year business mentorship program at Harvard University. I have over 20 years experience running various businesses ranging from music publishing, event production, real estate management, and sports marketing.   I’ve been independent since I was 16, funded all of my schooling myself and struggled hard to run my businesses. Along the way, I learned many valuable life lessons that have helped me establish who I am today. What kind of a childhood did you have? Growing up in Granville, Ohio on a farm was not easy. I was bullied and outcasted because I grew up on a farm and had no fashion sense or much parental directions. I wore heavy, thick rimmed glasses and wore whatever my parents could afford, which usually meant, mismatched or do...
